Digital Roots: How Smart Data is Transforming Olive Growing in Slovenian Istria
In Slovenian Istria, where every olive tree is unique and every slope holds its own character, olive oil production is becoming increasingly reliant on precise data and knowledge. That’s why the Institute of Olive Growing at the Science and Research Centre Koper developed eOljka, a digital platform that gives olive growers real-time access to crucial information — from phenological stages of olive trees and pest presence (especially the olive fruit fly), to local weather conditions. This innovative tool helps farmers make better, more timely decisions — right there in the field.
One of the most compelling proofs of its value comes from Vanja Dujc, a renowned Istrian olive grower who, in 2021, received the prestigious Olio Nuovo award in Paris for the best olive oil in the Northern Hemisphere. Dujc later shared that during the critical growing season, he closely followed data from the eOljka portal. Although the recommendations initially seemed unusual, he trusted them — and followed them precisely. According to him, that decision was key to producing exceptional oil and achieving international recognition.
