Webinar: What, When and How to Patent for Maximum Business Value

Are you interested in what, when, and how to patent in order to achieve the greatest possible business value? Join the online lecture on 6 October 2026, from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

The lecture will draw on actual patent applications to explore how to address the three key decisions every inventor faces: what to patent, when to patent, and how to shape the rights arising from a patent.

Patent applications from five university spin-off companies will cover a range of topics. You will learn about a patent that was filed several months before the company was founded, a seven-month delay in filing an application that led to more than a decade of litigation, and a patent portfolio built around carefully designed elements that may not seem particularly attractive at first glance.

The lecture will be followed by a practical look at the PCT system as a tool for gaining additional time to decide on further patent protection.

Participation in the lecture is free of charge, but registration is required here.

The lecture is intended for researchers, students, innovators, start-ups, and technology transfer professionals. The lecture will be held in English.

The speaker will be Dr Martin Wilming, partner and European patent attorney at the Swiss firm Hepp Wenger Ryffel AG. He holds an LL.M. in Intellectual Property Law from CEIPI. He passed all parts of the European Qualifying Examination (EQE) on his first attempt. He is Chair of the Pharmaceutical Subcommittee of the European Patent Law Committee of the European Patent Institute (EPI) and a member of the SACEPO Working Party on Rules at the European Patent Office (EPO). He also serves on the boards of I3PM and VESPA. IAM Patent 1000 has repeatedly recognised him as a “Top Patent Professional” and “Global Leader”.

Dr Wilming regularly lectures on European and Swiss patent practice, patent litigation, and intellectual property strategies in the life sciences.
